小笠原諸島を除く関東以南の常緑広葉樹林に分布するが、南西諸島では奄美島と沖縄島には分布するが八重山群島にはいない。また、海外では中国から知られている。常緑広葉樹林の堆葉層に生息する。東南アジアに広く分布するH. ornatusによく似るが腹節背板に2対の留翅刺毛を備えていることで区別できる。H. ornatusは3対の留翅刺毛を備えている。食菌性。

This species is distributed in evergreen broad-leaved forests south of the Kanto region except for the Ogasawara Islands, but in the Ryukyu Islands, it is distributed in Amami Is. and Okinawa Is., but not in the Yaeyama group of Islands. It is also known from China, and inhabits the forest litter. It is very similar to H. ornatus which is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, but can be distinguished by having two pairs of wing-retaining setae on each abdominal tergite.
